Mayabhai Ahir comes from the Bhavnagar district of Saurashtra, a part of Gujarat where the evening dayro is a living tradition: villagers gather around a performer for songs, sayings, stories and a lot of laughter.
That is the world his programmes still sound like: country Gujarati, everyday characters, and humour pulled from ordinary village life.
Haste haste…The dayro stage
In a lok dayro he is both lok sahityakar (a performer of folk literature) and hasya kalakar (a comedian). A set often runs from rapid-fire jokes into a serious story, then back again.
Many of his talks carry the label હાસ્ય સાથે સમજણ ની વાત — "understanding, served with laughter".
સાંભળો…The epics, retold
A large part of his repertoire is the prasang — an episode from the epics told in plain Gujarati: Laxman's mistake, the night before the Mahabharat war, Arjun's son, Krishna and Sudama's friendship, Kans and Krishna.
He also tells stories of history and valour, such as Tanhaji, and of saints and sacred places across Saurashtra.
Kavi Kag Award2017 · Recognition
In 2017 he was one of the recipients of the Kavi Kag Award, an annual honour named after the Gujarati poet Dula Bhaya Kag and given to folk artists, writers and scholars for their contribution to Gujarati folk literature.
Alongside the dayro circuit he performs at santvani evenings, ashram gatherings and katha events.
